Schools in Jordan provide children with a variety of educational opportunities. The Jordanian educational system is divided into five levels: pre-primary, primary, preparatory, secondary, and higher education. Pre-primary education is available for children aged four to six and is not compulsory. Primary education is compulsory and is divided into two stages: basic and intermediate. Preparatory education, which is also compulsory, lasts three years and is the final stage of the primary level. Secondary education is divided into two main streams: academic and vocational. Academic secondary education lasts four years and culminates in the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi). Vocational secondary education lasts three years and culminates in the Technical Secondary Education Certificate Examination. Higher education is offered at universities and colleges and is divided into undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
